Geomatics

Expertise

The Centre's staff are familiar with many aspects of geomatics and computer processes.

Helmut Epp, Manager NWTCG

Helmut Epp has been managing the NWT Centre for Geomatics/Remote Sensing for the past 20 years. The Centre provides services and data to all departments within the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT). As part of the Centre he has worked with various sectors in the GNWT, aboriginal groups and the private sector. He has represented the Northwest Territories on the Canadian Council on Geomatics since 1994, is a member of the GeoBase Steering Committee, a member of the Geoconnections Management Board, a member of the National Committee on the International Polar Year, and chairs the NWT Advisory committee on the International Polar year. He also chairs the Executive Steering Committee for the Circumpolar Symposia for Remote Sensing of Polar Environments.

Before joining the GNWT Mr. Epp spent ten years in East Africa as a Research Scientist working with African counterparts in the use of spatial data for agricultural development, wildlife management, forestry management, and land use development. He set up the Remote Sensing Centre’s for the Government of Kenya, the Saskatchewan Research Council as a member of the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing, and the NWT Centre for Geomatics within the GNWT as part of his work in geomatics technology transfer.

Mr. Epp has extensive experience in spatial data management, spatial data analysis and mapping, geomatics operations management, and spatial data warehouse development. He has also been involved in the organization of a number of international geomatics symposia.

Mr. Epp holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Wilfred Laurier University and a Masters of Science from the University of Sheffield in the UK.

Norm Mair, Geomatics Officer  (867) 920-3324

A long time northerner, Norm has been with the Geomatics Centre since 1990. If you have a custom-mapping project in mind please drop by his office for a consult. Using a Geographical Information System, maps of varying complexity can be built and your data analyzed to draw out different forms of information. Some examples of final products you can expect are quality paper maps, posters, reports, and digital files. Assistance is also provided with loaner laptops and projectors as well as help printing or connecting to one of the division’s networked printers.

Cathie Harper, GIS Specialist 867 (920-3326)

Cathie came North as the first ARC/INFO GIS specialist in the winter of ’96 for two years and currently is working on her twelth year in the north with no plans to leave. She graduated in forestry from UNB in 1976 and worked in forestry in various locations in Ontario for the next ten years and then decided on a change. GIS was just starting to become the ‘in’ way of doing things so she was able to almost immediately enroll in the GIS programme at Sir Sandford Fleming College. ARC/INFO was at version 3, pcArc/INFO was just on the market and ArcView hadn’t even been thought of yet when she graduated and ArcGIS was way in the future. Working in the consulting industry in Toronto doing GIS analysis and mapping for various clients, included using GIS to help locate a landfill site for Metro Toronto and York Region (garbage situation in Toronto is only a result of a change in government before we could move from five sites to a preferred one) and a trip to Trinidad and Tobago on ‘business’. Cathie created a digital Borden Index that is being used by Archaeologists across Canada. She is custodian of the digital boundaries that have been created for the Wildlife Regulations and periodically has to write the legal descriptions as changes occur. She has also maintains a consistent areas set of 'land use' areas in the NWT that are updated as changes occur. If you have specific training needs, please contact her as she is more than willing to help setup any Geomatics training where there is sufficient interest. She has extensive experience in map creation and analysis development.

Steve Schwarz, Remote Sensing Analyst  (867) 920-3325

As a Remote Sensing Analyst, Steve provides geomatics, and specifically remote sensing (aerial photography and satellite imagery) services (data analysis, data processing, and creation of map products), technical advice and recommendations to departmental personnel and external clients on Geomatics solutions for the management, monitoring and economic development of resources, wildlife, and the environment in the NWT. Steve has experience leading and coordinating geomatics activities, and in project management involving developing technical procedures and specifications, administering contracts, and the applications, technologies, techniques and methods to collect, compile, analyse, process, disseminate and present geospatial data. Steve has worked in the Geomatics field for over 15 years, and his education background includes a B.Sc and M.Sc. in Geology, and an Advanced Diploma in GIS and Remote Sensing. Since 2001, Steve has applied GIS and remote sensing techniques to various resource management sectors within INAC and the GNWT.

Kyle Rentmeister, Remote Sensing Analyst  (867) 873-7345

Kyle has lived up in the north for most of his life and is a new addition to the Centre’s already skilled team. As a GIS Intern, Kyle provides general assistance in all areas of the NWT Centre for Geomatics. Since he began at the NWTCG he has acquired thorough knowledge involved in map-making using ArcGIS software specifically ArcMAP, ArcCatalog and ArcScene, as well as knowledge of data storage and metadata creation. He can help with any printing and scanning of large maps as well as server connection and maintenance. He monitors and maintains both the Spatial Data Warehouse and the Geomatics website associated with the Centre, and is responsible for keeping satellite imagery on the websites is updated daily. Kyle is a University of Alberta graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Biological Sciences with a minor in Physical Sciences.
